Do I dare say that we may get a good monsoon season this year? This week’s taste of rain was so wonderful and I can’t wait for more. I’m sure our growers are appreciating the cooler temperatures, cloud cover, and occasional sprinkle as well. Summer officially begins this week and the first of the traditional summer produce is rolling in. This week we get our first taste of carrots, fennel, parsley, summer squash, and seasoned onions. What a week! Whipstone Farm’s carrots are one of the things I look forward to most each season. You will never be able to go back to grocery store carrots once you taste these sweet, crisp, fresh carrots. There is truly no comparison!
I was out at Verde Valley School for my high school reunion this past weekend and had the pleasure of visiting their beautiful farm. The VVS Farm is a real labor of love led by Mike Spielman, who you can often find at the Sedona Community Farmers’ Market. Mike (along with countless students, volunteers, and VVS Sustainability Coordinator John Chorlton) has built this farm from a completely bare patch of earth into a thriving food system. It doesn’t look like a traditional farm because strawberries, amaranth, herbs, and more traditional crops grow underneath orchard trees, around sculptures and benches, under arbors of passionflower vine, and all with an epic view of Cathedral Rock. Verde Valley School is opening up their farm to visitors each Wednesday evening this summer from 5-9pm. Stroll around the beautiful grounds, eat a freshly-cooked wood-fired pizza, and buy produce and garden starts from the farm’s greenhouse. It is a great opportunity to see a unique working farm in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable.
Have a marvelous week!
