June 1, 2022

This is shaping up to be a wonderful week. Winds should be dying down, skies clearing up, and lots more delicious produce headed your way. This week’s share includes sugar snap peas from Fasteen Farms in Camp Verde. These peas were grown just for our CSA shares and we are so grateful! A fun surprise for this week is pecans from shareholder Alice Tyson-Sordahl’s pecan orchard. It feels like a full circle experience to include a shareholder’s own crop in these baskets. What a treat! Rounding out the basket, we have Swiss chard, salad mix, chives, salad turnips, and tatsoi. Salad turnips are delicious fresh or cooked. I like to slice them up and dip them in homemade ranch dressing. Last week’s dill will be perfect for that. Tatsoi is a green most notably used in Asian cuisine. It can be mixed into salads, cooked with other greens, added to sandwiches, pizzas, and tacos, or made into pesto. We hope you love it!

Every week of the CSA is different and you will likely be looking for other produce to supplement what you receive in your basket. Willowbrook Farm, Sanders Farm, Fasteen Farms, and Camptown Greens all sell at the Verde Valley Farmers’ Market each Saturday in Camp Verde alongside many other local farmers. You can find almost everything you need at this wonderful market. Sedona Community Farmers’ Market is held every Sunday and also has a wide variety of produce, although most of it comes from outside the Verde Valley. Whipstone Farm’s produce and flowers can be found at Interdependence Natural Foods in Sedona, along with locally produced eggs, meat, dairy, and more. These wonderful markets make eating locally easier than ever.

For those of you with egg shares, please feel free to return your empty egg cartons each week and we will return them to the farms for reuse. Thanks for helping us reduce waste! And if you are still considering signing up for a flower share, you have just two more weeks to join this 12-week share. Whipstone Farm’s flowers are truly a miracle of local farming and we are so lucky to have them.

Have a terrific week!
Meghan
