Happy summer! After Friday’s solstice, summer has arrived in earnest and it has brought the bugs. I’m sure you’ve all had a few encounters with the no-see-ums, but now the grasshoppers, aphids, thrips, and more are getting up to no good in the fields. Growing produce organically is no easy feat! As Shanti from Whipstone Farm said in her newsletter this week, “While we do what we can with crop rotation, releasing beneficials. physical barriers (like row cover/remay) and organic sprays – there is just no way to escape them all.  So, if you see a little bug damage – please be forgiving and know that your food is clean (clean from chemicals, but it may need an extra rinse to get those straggling insects off).”

This week brings apricots (yum!), the start to what looks to be a good fruit season. Apricots do get soft quickly, so please enjoy them within a day or two for best results. They make a great snack on the drive home from CSA pickup. Also new this week are broccolini and edible flowers. Use the flowers to spruce up your salad mix for a very Instagram-worthy meal. Broccolini is more mild than regular broccoli and can be used in place of broccoli in most recipes. Be sure to include the tender stalks; they are delicious. I’ve included a brocollini recipe below if you need a little inspiration.

Have a delightful week!
