What an incredible kickoff to the monsoon season yesterday! I am not sure how our farms fared, but Sedona sure got hit hard. This time of year brings a lot of weather changes that can seriously affect crops. Hail can shred fields of lettuce, kale, and other tender greens, as well as damage tomatoes, apples, peppers, and more. Too much rain can cause tomatoes to swell and split their skins. Torrential rains can flood fields, leaving crops caked in mud and debris. And blistering heat can burn tender plants, not to mention tender farmers. All this to say, it can be rough out there! Three cheers for the dedicated growers who persist through all the meteorological challenges thrown at them.

This week we have a great mix of produce. Beets, cabbage, potatoes, and summer squash are all new this week. Potatoes are courtesy of Sanders Farm in Camp Verde. Dave and Ramona Sanders are incredibly skilled farmers who have perfected the art of growing potatoes. You will love them! The Sanders sell additional produce each week at the Verde Valley Farmers’ Market in Camp Verde, and sometimes at the Cornville Farmers’ Market as well. I imagine that all of you are feeling well supplied in the produce department, but these two farmers’ markets are excellent for supplementing your CSA share each week. Interdependence Natural Foods in Sedona carries additional produce from Whipstone Farm, and is another great option if you are looking for a particular vegetable. We are blessed to have so many farmers and outlets for procuring produce in Arizona!

Have a terrific week!
